Answering Machine Blues

Nearly eight years ago, I recorded this message for my answering machine. Here it is once again for old times' sake:

P.S. Apparently, it is not obvious to everyone that I am the one singing and playing the guitar in the recording. So, for the record, yes, that is indeed me playing the guitar and singing for my answering machine nearly eight years ago.

You Should Have Come Over

A stillness came to the house when you were around
At night, as the music began to fade out.
I surrendered as my walls came tumbling down
And the mark in my forehead became just a frown.

Your breath filled the air as I lay awake in bed,
Your scent the only company to keep my nightmares in check.

My memories were entangled with your hair
They came to me with the wind as I followed your trail
I had to forget them, you said, forgive her and give it a rest.
Your voice drowned under the sound of the ocean’s waves.

I wanted to sing and call out your name,
Give you my song and take you away.

Silence, however, is all that remains.
